Ben Gant Innovative Practice Award 2018: Jason Cridge
Jason Cridge took home the Innovative Practice Award at the British Columbia Pharmacy Association’s (BCPhA) Pharmacy Excellence Awards on May 25, 2018. The association praised his use of spencer technology as part of an outstanding in-home service model that he has developed for Cridge Family Pharmacy, which he founded in downtown Victoria, BC in 2013.
“I'm humbled to win this award,” Cridge said. “It is validation in that we are moving in the right direction.” Inspired by his pharmacist Uncle, Cridge knew he wanted to join the profession at 10-years-old and didn’t waste any time before setting up his practice. He founded Cridge Family Pharmacy less than a year after finishing his pharmacy degree at the University of British Columbia.
In-home healthcare for seniors is a priority at Cridge Family Pharmacy and Cridge saw “a huge opportunity in the local market” for spencer. spencer is an automated dispensing device which allows elderly patients to manage multiple medications with no fuss from home while digitally linking the patient with their pharmacist, caregivers and loved ones via updates, notifications, and messages.
“spencer is absolutely one-of-a-kind. It’s unique in how it genuinely helps people with their quality of life and allowing them to age in place,” Cridge said. He was among the first Canadian pharmacists to get started with spencer – and the gamble has paid off. “Our biggest boost to business has been incorporating spencer into our in-home service model.” Cridge said.
Cridge is proud of his close relationship with Catalyst, which he says is “on a different level because we work so closely on the spencer program," adding that “they are always helpful and willing to be creative, which is great because we share that quality.” He has witnessed spencer’s popularity surge over the eight months as more people have become familiar with it. “It has been a snowball effect as people tell their friends, their family, and the information disseminates, and the clinicians hear more,” he said.
Catalyst launched spencer in fall of 2017, and thanks to the success of early adopters such as Ben Gant Award-winning Jason Cridge, spencer is now available across an expanding network of pharmacies.
